In case you missed the first few announcements, we're asking that everyone give at least $10 for coaches' gifts. If you're feeling generous, we won't refuse more :) We have the best coaching staff in the league, and we all know how much hard work they put in to see us succeed. This is your chance to say thank you for all the encouragement, expertise, and energy they've given us.

PLEASE BRING THE MONEY TO THE TRACK AFTER SCHOOL ON MONDAY! Even though there is no practice, I will be there! Thanks so much for your support.

Help On Facebook

I did my best to post the 200's to Facebook but fell on my face instead. If you can post the post of 200's to Facebook could you please?

Doug

How many 200's?

Today, April 13, a Friday, the Panthers distance runners cursed the entire running world with demonic feats.

Each runner had 1 minute to run 200 meters and then after the minute was up run another 200 meters. But unknown to them was that the devil Sean would say all out for any one 200 in a set of 4 200's. The runners never knew in advance when they would have to run all out in that set of 4 or half mile(800meters). Sometimes because it was Friday the 13th Satan Sean would make them do 2 in a row. It was sometimes hailing during the workout so all I could guess was Sean was trying to get the temperature more closely to his own home. The runners ran. If you could not make the 1 minute at any one time you were eliminated and got to get warm(oh so devilish) by putting on your warmups. The resistors kept running. No hell for them. Hell waited a long time. Sadia was the last girl to give her self up to heaven after 50 200's(6.2 miles) Last year she completed 22. The boys got testeronified(an underworld term). Jordan, Aden, Michael, Mikey, Cris, Ethan(Freshman from Hell), Jonberg of the recovering ankle were pumped up. So they continued. Ethan first out with a new Frosh standard of Festophlian accomlishment. Aden came to understanding after 55 or more then Cris with a sore knee was next to tender under Faust's haven. Mikey said goodbye to the lap after lap after about 65? or so. NCS champion Michael knew the devil and said I'll have no part of you after around 70. So last year Jordan hit 55 with Peck and today the Devil may care took hold of our senior borne from Dante. But who is this Jonberg? Does he come from the Faerie? Is he of the netherworld. Do we know him? He stalks Jordan 200 after 200. He attempts to pass Jordan in his Styxian sojourn, but Jordan repels him time and time again. Both runners are past running and only exist to exist to beat the awaiting flames of burning thighs and calves. Drop to the fires NO WAY!!!! The crowd of fellow lost souls begin to chant their names, Bob Shor all in RED steps onto the track to mark their fall to oblivion. It doesn't happen. The crowd grows hungry, they keep on going. The spectators go back and forth slavering over who will drop first. They keep on going. Could they be of Vampire ilk and live eternally through the night? The Balrog known now as Sean says after each 200 "ALL OUT". He really appears to be the Lord of the Underworld. NO WAY!

Hell was not the result on this 2012 13th of April, a Friday. I'm not sure it was heaven. But two runners from Santa Rosa High School defied the devil and all of his cruel tricks and ran 80 200 meters. In American terms that is 10 miles. Each 200 on the oval called a track and each under 1 minute and many at 35 seconds or less. Jonberg and Jordan defied the devil on this day and set a standard that even Mephistopheles envies.

Great job all of you Panthers this Friday the 13th of April, 2012. Maybe just a slice of Heaven.

Sprinters on Saturdays

Hey, Sprinters!

Beginning this Saturday at Howarth Park upper parking lot the sprinters begin the OFFICIAL STRENGTH RUNS. Meeting with distance runners at 9AM the distance runners will try to run to the moon while the sprinters will stay earthbound doing strength running up and down some nice slopes. I hope to make this part of the regular routine for our short distance blazing fast runners. Sprinting success comes with hard work. I know we have the speedy people and I know you can improve exponentially with sprint hill work on Saturdays. Take advantage of these opportunities to get faster.

2012 Track and Field Parent Letter

Here is the letter to parents that will be sent out tomorrow by the postal service. Please read.

February 22, 2012

Dear Panther Parents:

Welcome to the 2012 Santa Rosa High School Track and Field Season. It looks to be another great year for our young Panthers running, throwing, and jumping through the Spring season. We have a very large team this year with many new athletes. We also have some outstanding returning students that will provide leadership and guidance to our new athletes.
I have always felt we have a successful program and that success is due to a community effort of athletes, coaches and very importantly, parents. All three aspects have given Santa Rosa High School Track and Field the best reputation in the Redwood Empire. Because of students, coaches, and parents that reputation is well earned. This year I am asking you to once again help display our excellence.
We put on three Track and Field meets this year. The Big Cat on Saturday March 3, The Special Relays on Wednesday March 14, and The Redwood Area Championships on Saturday May 19. All of these meets will be at our school. We need you to help at these contests. No experience is necessary. You will be guided in whatever job you happen to be part of. Working first hand at our track and field meets you get an opportunity to be part of the action up close. You also get to appreciate the skill demonstrated by the athletes. Dealing with these athletes is probably the best part of the jobs. Most of the kids are respectful and courteous. If they are not let me know and the situation will be easily dealt with. We have had very few bad instances in the 20 years I have been coaching at Santa Rosa High. I am enclosing a volunteer sheet for you to complete. You can give it to your child to deliver to me or you can put it in my in box at school. I thank you in advance for your help, it is a great experience. (You also get free admission into the meet)
The Big Cat is in its 20th year and athletes from 18 schools in Sonoma County and San Francisco participate. Usually we have around 700 competitors. So you see that we need a lot of help.
This year we are hosting the Redwood Empire Area Championships. That includes the top 6 finishers from all 4 of the League Championships in the Redwood Empire (Golden Gate Bridge north to the Oregon border). We were asked by the North Coast Section to host this meet because they know we will do the best job. This meet qualifies the athletes for the North Coast Section Championships held at UC Berkeley. From there the athletes qualify to compete at the State Championships. The Redwood Empire Meet showcases the very best athletes from our area.
Having a large team we are also going to need help transporting our kids to the two local meets on Wed April 11(Maria Carrillo) and Wed Apr 25(Cardinal Newman). If you can volunteer to drive it would be a tremendous help. We will be taking a bus to Ukiah.
We will be doing a fundraiser this year selling cards for magazine subscriptions. More information will be sent home with your kids. We have over 120 kids on the team and it is expensive to run this program. We try to provide the best opportunities and equipment for our athletes but it takes money. I hope we get a good participation in our fundraising endeavor.
I would like to introduce our coaching staff that has over 135 years of combined coaching in Track and Field and over 97 of those years at Santa Rosa High School.
Myself-sprints, jumps, relays, paperwork
Carrie Joseph- distance and wherever she can help
Bob Shor-hurdles, sprints and he starts all of our meets
Sean Fitzpatrick-distance and automatic timing guru
Jim Veilleux-pole vault and high jump
Paul Troppy-shot put and discus
And new this year
David Kimari-pole vault, distance
Josh Mesa-sprints and jumps
Christa Durand-shot put and discus
We are all certified coaches.

I look forward to meeting all of you new parents and seeing all of you returnees once more. You are going to enjoy watching your children grow in this sport and hopefully as individuals as well. Please feel free to contact me at 528-0627 and at zeemie@aol.com

Sincerely,

Doug Courtemarche
Head Track and Field Coach, Santa Rosa High School

Arctic Relays

Ladies and Gentlemen. In this corner we have returning for the 20th year the Polar Bears. Directly across from them lurk the Killer Whales just waiting for a White Ursine to drop from an ice floe. A relative newcomer ponders the 3rd corner, for 16 years the Mighty Moose has antlered its way to a chance at victory. And this the 20th annual Arctic Relays we have our first newcomer, the Snow Panther. An unknown from the frozen wilderness of the North. It is said the claw of the Snow Panther can easily rip out the heart of a Moose while simultaneously the Panther jaws savor the sweet Killer Whale. But what of the Polar Bear? No mention of the two every meeting. What does this foretell? Does the Polar Bear take down the Snow Panther or does the Killer Whale devour the Polar Bear or does the Mighty Moose make minced meat of the Killer Whale. The result awaits. The 20th Annual Santa Rosa High School Arctic Relays kick off at 3:45 Friday at frozen Nevers Field. Come watch the carnage. Root on your favorite beast. Make sure you choose wisely.

Track and Field practice begins at 3:15 Monday February 6 at Nevers Field. It looks to be another great year for the Panther "Athletic" squad. (Athletics is the Olympic and International name for Track and Field)

I will be posting here often during the season to help facilitate and reiterate things that need such.

The first order of business is "Are you cleared to begin practice?"

If you have participated in a fall or winter sport at SRHS this school year you must still pay the $50 fee at the business office and get a receipt and give that to me. If you get a waiver of the fee you must give me that receipt as well. That is all that you athletes need to.

For everyone there is a $150 limit on what a family pays for the entire school year. The Kennedy family had three athletes on the Cross Country team so their financial obligation for sports for this current school year was taken care of. No family needs to pay more than $150 per school year.

If Track and Field is the first sport you have participated in this school year you will need to have your athletic packet completed and all places where signatures are requested signed. You must have a physical dated 6/1/2011 or later attached to your packet or the page for the physical completed by your doctor. If you don't have medical insurance or it'll take too long to schedule a physical through your normal health care provider, Santa Rosa Sports Medicine offers low cost physicals on a flexible schedule. Call them to schedule a sports physical ASAP. Their number is 707-546-9400.
You and your parents need to make sure that the top of the physical page in the packet is completed by you in both of the above cases. You will need to pay the fee at the business office and attach the receipt to the packet and turn it into me. DO NOT TURN IN PACKETS TO MR DELLEPERE OR FITZPATRICK. All new completed packets need to be turned into me with the business office receipt for payment or the waiver sheet.

Everyone that has signed up or wants to sign up even though you have not completed your paperwork or have a current physical NEEDS TO SHOW UP FOR THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE. For those that don't have a completed packet or the fee taken care of will not be able to practice until you turn in those items but you still need to show up for the first day of practice.

Let's get all of the paperwork taken care of so we can get on with our season. We have a huge team. 190 signups. Of course not that many will show up and stay with us but we are going to have a large team.

We have one of the best coaching staff you will find anywhere for any sport. We have three new coaches this year. Josh Mesa, a SRHS graduate of 1999 who ran sprints, hurdles, long and triple jumped. Josh is certified athletic trainer who is very excited and happy about coming back to SRHS. David Kimari is a senior at Sonoma State getting his degree in Kineseology. David has been a counselor at Cross Country camp the past 4 years and graduated from SRHS in 2007, the year he won the Redwood Empire Pole Vault Championship in Crescent City for SRHS. It was the final event that gave the boys the points needed to win the Redwood Empire Championship in Track and Field. David will be working the pole vaulters and assisting in distance as needed. Christa Durand is an Ursuline graduate of 2003 where she put the shot out at 32'11" and threw the discus 126'9". Let's welcome our new coaches who are extremely talented and qualified and will help you achieve your goals.
And the old coaches are myself with the sprints, long and triple jumps, relays and overall boss. Carrie Joseph distance. Bob Shor in the hurdles. Jim Veilleux in the pole vault and high jump. Sean Fitzpatrick in the distance. Paul Troppy for shot put and discus. And that ladies and gentlemen is one great coaching staff.

PANCAKES = Good!

Come to Carrie's house on MLK, Jr. day for a run and a treat (home-made chocolate chip pancakes... chocolate milk... you get the idea!).

The run starts at 9:00 a.m. Promise me you'll run for at least 30 minutes and I will make it worth your time!

Place: 2908 Field Stone Court. Go east on Hoen Ave, turn right and go south on Summerfield Road. Take the 3rd left on Carissa Ave. Then turn right on the 2nd cul-de-sac.

Join the fun! You don't have to be a distance runner to benefit from exercise and carbs!:-)

Winter Conditioning For All Track Athletes

Don't want to start the track season out of shape? You don't have to! Our team does optional conditioning six days a week, so you can be ready to have the best season possible. All meeting times are at 3:15; here's the schedule:

Monday: Track entrance, running workout
Tuesday: Weight room, easy run
Wednesday: Track entrance, running workout
Thursday: Weight room, easy run
Friday: Track entrance, easy run
Saturday: 9 am, easy long run. Meet in the upper parking lot at Howarth Park, which is off of Summerfield Road in Santa Rosa. Turn into the park, and follow the driveway straight up the hill. Turn right across from the playground with the climbing wall, and enter into the upper parking lot. Runners will be at the trail entrance that's across the lot opposite from the snack shack/bathrooms/trains. This is closest to the lake, where the three yellow poles and dock are located.

You don't have to be a distance runner to benefit from running workouts. Running is excellent conditioning and will help everyone. Just a reminder that ALL track and field athletes, including jumpers, sprinters, and throwers, will have to run at least a half mile warm up before practice every day. Doing this off season conditioning will make those two laps seem like a breeze. No one will make you run 10 miles or anything crazy like that, you can go at your own pace and decide how much you want to push yourself. Join us!

Track starts Monday, February 6. Come into the season prepared and ready to succeed!
