Dear Panther Parents:
Welcome to the 2012 Santa Rosa High School Track and Field Season. It looks to be another great year for our young Panthers running, throwing, and jumping through the Spring season. We have a very large team this year with many new athletes. We also have some outstanding returning students that will provide leadership and guidance to our new athletes.
I have always felt we have a successful program and that success is due to a community effort of athletes, coaches and very importantly, parents. All three aspects have given Santa Rosa High School Track and Field the best reputation in the Redwood Empire. Because of students, coaches, and parents that reputation is well earned. This year I am asking you to once again help display our excellence.
We put on three Track and Field meets this year. The Big Cat on Saturday March 3, The Special Relays on Wednesday March 14, and The Redwood Area Championships on Saturday May 19. All of these meets will be at our school. We need you to help at these contests. No experience is necessary. You will be guided in whatever job you happen to be part of. Working first hand at our track and field meets you get an opportunity to be part of the action up close. You also get to appreciate the skill demonstrated by the athletes. Dealing with these athletes is probably the best part of the jobs. Most of the kids are respectful and courteous. If they are not let me know and the situation will be easily dealt with. We have had very few bad instances in the 20 years I have been coaching at Santa Rosa High. I am enclosing a volunteer sheet for you to complete. You can give it to your child to deliver to me or you can put it in my in box at school. I thank you in advance for your help, it is a great experience. (You also get free admission into the meet)
The Big Cat is in its 20th year and athletes from 18 schools in Sonoma County and San Francisco participate. Usually we have around 700 competitors. So you see that we need a lot of help.
This year we are hosting the Redwood Empire Area Championships. That includes the top 6 finishers from all 4 of the League Championships in the Redwood Empire (Golden Gate Bridge north to the Oregon border). We were asked by the North Coast Section to host this meet because they know we will do the best job. This meet qualifies the athletes for the North Coast Section Championships held at UC Berkeley. From there the athletes qualify to compete at the State Championships. The Redwood Empire Meet showcases the very best athletes from our area.
Having a large team we are also going to need help transporting our kids to the two local meets on Wed April 11(Maria Carrillo) and Wed Apr 25(Cardinal Newman). If you can volunteer to drive it would be a tremendous help. We will be taking a bus to Ukiah.
We will be doing a fundraiser this year selling cards for magazine subscriptions. More information will be sent home with your kids. We have over 120 kids on the team and it is expensive to run this program. We try to provide the best opportunities and equipment for our athletes but it takes money. I hope we get a good participation in our fundraising endeavor.
I would like to introduce our coaching staff that has over 135 years of combined coaching in Track and Field and over 97 of those years at Santa Rosa High School.
