Practice Begins Are You Able to Practice?

Track and Field practice begins at 3:15 Monday February 6 at Nevers Field. It looks to be another great year for the Panther "Athletic" squad. (Athletics is the Olympic and International name for Track and Field)

I will be posting here often during the season to help facilitate and reiterate things that need such.

The first order of business is "Are you cleared to begin practice?"

If you have participated in a fall or winter sport at SRHS this school year you must still pay the $50 fee at the business office and get a receipt and give that to me. If you get a waiver of the fee you must give me that receipt as well. That is all that you athletes need to.

For everyone there is a $150 limit on what a family pays for the entire school year. The Kennedy family had three athletes on the Cross Country team so their financial obligation for sports for this current school year was taken care of. No family needs to pay more than $150 per school year.

If Track and Field is the first sport you have participated in this school year you will need to have your athletic packet completed and all places where signatures are requested signed. You must have a physical dated 6/1/2011 or later attached to your packet or the page for the physical completed by your doctor. If you don't have medical insurance or it'll take too long to schedule a physical through your normal health care provider, Santa Rosa Sports Medicine offers low cost physicals on a flexible schedule. Call them to schedule a sports physical ASAP. Their number is 707-546-9400.
You and your parents need to make sure that the top of the physical page in the packet is completed by you in both of the above cases. You will need to pay the fee at the business office and attach the receipt to the packet and turn it into me. DO NOT TURN IN PACKETS TO MR DELLEPERE OR FITZPATRICK. All new completed packets need to be turned into me with the business office receipt for payment or the waiver sheet.

Everyone that has signed up or wants to sign up even though you have not completed your paperwork or have a current physical NEEDS TO SHOW UP FOR THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE. For those that don't have a completed packet or the fee taken care of will not be able to practice until you turn in those items but you still need to show up for the first day of practice.

Let's get all of the paperwork taken care of so we can get on with our season. We have a huge team. 190 signups. Of course not that many will show up and stay with us but we are going to have a large team.

We have one of the best coaching staff you will find anywhere for any sport. We have three new coaches this year. Josh Mesa, a SRHS graduate of 1999 who ran sprints, hurdles, long and triple jumped. Josh is certified athletic trainer who is very excited and happy about coming back to SRHS. David Kimari is a senior at Sonoma State getting his degree in Kineseology. David has been a counselor at Cross Country camp the past 4 years and graduated from SRHS in 2007, the year he won the Redwood Empire Pole Vault Championship in Crescent City for SRHS. It was the final event that gave the boys the points needed to win the Redwood Empire Championship in Track and Field. David will be working the pole vaulters and assisting in distance as needed. Christa Durand is an Ursuline graduate of 2003 where she put the shot out at 32'11" and threw the discus 126'9". Let's welcome our new coaches who are extremely talented and qualified and will help you achieve your goals.
And the old coaches are myself with the sprints, long and triple jumps, relays and overall boss. Carrie Joseph distance. Bob Shor in the hurdles. Jim Veilleux in the pole vault and high jump. Sean Fitzpatrick in the distance. Paul Troppy for shot put and discus. And that ladies and gentlemen is one great coaching staff.

PANCAKES = Good!

Come to Carrie's house on MLK, Jr. day for a run and a treat (home-made chocolate chip pancakes... chocolate milk... you get the idea!).

The run starts at 9:00 a.m. Promise me you'll run for at least 30 minutes and I will make it worth your time!

Place: 2908 Field Stone Court. Go east on Hoen Ave, turn right and go south on Summerfield Road. Take the 3rd left on Carissa Ave. Then turn right on the 2nd cul-de-sac.

Join the fun! You don't have to be a distance runner to benefit from exercise and carbs!:-)

Winter Conditioning For All Track Athletes

Don't want to start the track season out of shape? You don't have to! Our team does optional conditioning six days a week, so you can be ready to have the best season possible. All meeting times are at 3:15; here's the schedule:

Monday: Track entrance, running workout
Tuesday: Weight room, easy run
Wednesday: Track entrance, running workout
Thursday: Weight room, easy run
Friday: Track entrance, easy run
Saturday: 9 am, easy long run. Meet in the upper parking lot at Howarth Park, which is off of Summerfield Road in Santa Rosa. Turn into the park, and follow the driveway straight up the hill. Turn right across from the playground with the climbing wall, and enter into the upper parking lot. Runners will be at the trail entrance that's across the lot opposite from the snack shack/bathrooms/trains. This is closest to the lake, where the three yellow poles and dock are located.

You don't have to be a distance runner to benefit from running workouts. Running is excellent conditioning and will help everyone. Just a reminder that ALL track and field athletes, including jumpers, sprinters, and throwers, will have to run at least a half mile warm up before practice every day. Doing this off season conditioning will make those two laps seem like a breeze. No one will make you run 10 miles or anything crazy like that, you can go at your own pace and decide how much you want to push yourself. Join us!

Track starts Monday, February 6. Come into the season prepared and ready to succeed!
